A Grand Entrance Fish Pond & Decorative Water Feature
Completed in 2025, this custom ecosystem pond transformed what was simply a bare dirt island in the middle of a large circular driveway into a stunning entrance feature that now welcomes visitors with the soothing sights and sounds of flowing water.
When our client in Thornlands contacted Pond Works, he wanted to make the most of this unused space. He envisioned an impressive water feature that would create a sense of grandeur while also providing a beautiful home for ornamental fish.
The result is a striking ecosystem pond with a dramatic cluster of decorative water features that has become the centrepiece of the property’s entrance.

The Clients Vision
The brief was to create a feature that made an immediate impression.
Located in the centre of a large circular driveway, the pond needed to look spectacular from every angle. Whether visitors were arriving by car, walking to the front door or viewing it from inside the home, the feature had to feel balanced, elegant and inviting.
It also needed to be more than just a decorative water feature as it was to become a healthy ecosystem pond where fish, aquatic plants and beneficial bacteria could work together to create a naturally balanced environment.
The Design
The completed pond measures approximately 6 metres long by 4 metres wide and is up to 800mm deep, providing plenty of room for fish while creating a generous body of water that complements the scale of the entrance.
To achieve the client’s vision of grandeur, we installed a cluster of Aquascape decorative water features, including:
- Two 32-inch Green Slate Patio Ponds
- One Medium Stacked Slate Urn
- Two Small Stacked Slate Urns
Standing approximately 1.5 to 1.8 metres high, these decorative features create multiple streams of flowing water that cascade naturally over basalt boulders before returning to the pond via a series of waterfalls.
The combination of moving water, natural stone and carefully selected feature pieces creates an entrance that is both elegant and calming.
Natural Basalt Stone
Approximately 10 tonnes of basalt boulders and gravel were used throughout the project.
Basalt is one of our preferred landscape stones for ecosystem ponds because it creates a timeless, natural appearance while providing excellent structure for waterfalls, planting pockets and fish habitat.
The dark tones of the basalt also contrast beautifully with the stacked slate urns, creating a feature that feels as though it has always belonged in the landscape.
The Biggest Challenge
While the construction itself progressed smoothly, the greatest challenge was ensuring perfect alignment.
With the pond positioned in the centre of a circular driveway, every viewing angle mattered.
The decorative water features had to line up perfectly when viewed from the driveway entrance, the front door and surrounding areas of the property. Achieving this required careful planning and precise positioning throughout the build.
The attention to detail has resulted in a feature that looks balanced and impressive from every perspective.

From Construction Site to Living Ecosystem
One of the most rewarding parts of any pond project is watching it mature over time.
After construction was complete, we supplied and stocked the pond with a selection of hardy fish, including:
- Goldfish
- Crimson Spot Rainbowfish
- Catfish
We also supplied the water lilies and completed the aquatic planting, helping establish a healthy ecosystem from the very beginning.
The water lilies not only provide beautiful seasonal colour but also create shade for the fish, helping maintain healthier water conditions throughout the year.
A Healthy Pond That Keeps Getting Better
One of the greatest rewards came during our first annual maintenance visit.
Since completing the pond in 2025, we continue to service it each year as part of our annual clean-out program. During one of these visits we were delighted to discover that the Crimson Spot Rainbowfish have successfully bred.
Seeing native fish reproduce naturally is one of the best indicators that an ecosystem pond is functioning exactly as it should. It demonstrates healthy water quality, suitable habitat and a balanced environment where fish feel safe enough to breed.
Annual Pond Maintenance
Like all ecosystem ponds, this feature benefits from periodic professional maintenance to keep it performing at its best.
Our annual service includes:
- Removing accumulated organic debris
- Cleaning pumps and filtration systems
- Checking water circulation
- Pruning and maintaining aquatic plants
- Inspecting the overall health of the pond and its inhabitants
Because we built the pond ourselves, we understand every detail of the system and can ensure it continues to look and perform beautifully year after year.
