If you’ve ever looked at one of our water gardens and thought, “I can tell that’s a Pond Works pond” there’s a good chance you were noticing one of our favourite planting choice which is impatiens.

They’ve become something of a a signature for us, not because we love how they perform so well and create instant colour and softness around water features.

We also recommend a wide range of planting styles including native plants, tropical plants and customised planting schemes depending on the client and the environment.  Impatiens are simply a favourite because they consistently deliver great results in pond-side conditions.

Why Impatiens Work So Well Around Water Features

Impatiens thrive in conditions that naturally exist around water gardens:

  • Moist, well-drained soil
  • High humidity
  • Partial or filtered shade

Instead of trying to adapt a dry-land plant into a wet environment, impatiens already want those conditions.

This makes them ideal for creating soft, colourful planting around ponds, waterfalls and wetland-style features.

Perfect for Pond Edge and Moist Garden Zones

One of the biggest strengths of impatiens is how well they perform in pond-edge environments.

We typically use them:

  • Slightly back from the waterline
  • In consistently moist soil areas
  • In shaded or partially shaded garden beds

They help create a natural transition between:

  • Water
  • Rock and hardscape
  • Surrounding garden beds

The result is a softer, more established look especially in new builds.

Sun Tolerance and Summer Performance

While impatiens are best suited to shade or part shade, we find they can tolerate some sun depending on the conditions.

In warmer climates like Brisbane we generally find:

  • Morning sun/afternoon shade works best
  • Full sun is possible with careful irrigation

On very hot days they may wilt temporarily during the peak heat.  This is normal heat stress and we find that they typically recover quickly once temperatures drop or they are watered.

Irrigation makes a big difference

If impatiens are used in more exposed areas, we recommend

  • Drip irrigation or micro-spray systems
  • Consistent soil moisture
  • Avoid complete drying of the root zone.

How We Use Impatiens at Pond Works

Impatiens are just one part of a broader planting approach we recommend around water features.

Our recommendations often include a mix of:

  • Aquatic plants within and around the water zones
  • Marginal and moisture-loving plants at the edges
  • Structured foliage plants for contrast and form
  • Seasonal flowering plants such as impatiens for colour

Rather than relying on a single style, we recommend building layered planting combinations that suit the specific conditions of each pond and its surroundings.

Impatiens simply remain a favourite because they consistently deliver colour, softness and fast visual impact around water features.

Cottage Garden Influence and Planting Style

Impatiens also work well in cottage-style and English-inspired garden designs, which are popular around informal water features.

They suit:

  • Soft, layered planting schemes
  • Informal garden beds with mixed textures
  • Naturalistic pond edges without rigid structure

While they are not traditional English native plants, they are widely used in cottage-style planting because they replicate the same effect – dense, continuous flowering in mostly sheltered, shaded conditions.

In water gardens, this helps create a relaxed, established look that feels like the pond has always been part of the landscape.

A Recognisable Touch in Our Work

Over time, we’ve had clients say:

“We knew this was one of your ponds because of the impatiens.”

That’s not because every project looks the same – it’s because certain planting choices, when used consistently and well, become part of a recognisable style.

Impatiens have become one of those elements for us in the right conditions.

Final Thoughts

Impatiens aren’t the only plants we use but they are one of our favourites for softening and bringing colour to the areas around water features.

At Pond Works, we’re not just building ponds for clients, we’re actively living with them as well. Our team are avid water gardeners, and we also have multiple ponds at home that we maintain and experiment with. That hands-on experience is what shapes the way we design and select planting for our water features.

This real-world testing is a big reason we understand how plants like impatiens perform in different conditions.  We know what works, what struggles, and how they can be best used in pond-edge environments.

When combined with aquatic plants, marginal plantings, and other carefully selected species, impatiens help create a balanced, natural-looking water garden that feels established rather than newly installed.

At Pond Works, the focus is always on building quality water features and recommending planting that enhances the final result, whether it’s installed by the client, us or their landscaper.

Because in the end, a great water garden isn’t just about the pond itself. It’s about how everything around it comes together, and how it performs in the real world over time.
