The Client Brief
Our clients are highly respected figures within Australia’s bonsai community, having spent decades cultivating and caring for some truly remarkable bonsai specimens. When they relocated to their new property, these treasured trees came with them.
Their vision was to create a water feature that would become the heart of the garden and a place where their prized bonsai collection could be showcased within a setting that reflected the beauty, balance and tranquility of traditional Japanese-inspired landscapes.
The result is a harmonious environment where water, stone, timber and plant material work together to create a garden that invites quiet reflection and appreciation.
Bringing Japanese Garden Principles to Life
While not intended to be a traditional Japanese garden in the strict sense, the design draws heavily from Japanese landscape principles.
A key element of the project was the careful placement of stone throughout the landscape. In Japanese-inspired gardens, rocks are often considered the framework of the garden, representing mountains, islands, and natural landforms. Rather than focusing on simply placing large boulders, attention was given to the orientation, grouping, and relationship of each stone to create a natural sense of balance and permanence.
The basalt boulders were positioned to create subtle peaks and changes in elevation around the ponds and stream, helping to guide the eye through the landscape while providing a strong visual structure for the garden as it matures. Japanese pagoda lanterns were incorporated as focal points within these stone arrangements, creating moments of interest and reflection throughout the space.
Over time, as the bonsai collection and surrounding plantings continue to develop, the stonework will remain the foundation that ties the entire garden together.
The Water Feature Design
The project features two interconnected ecosystem ponds linked by a natural-style stream.
A biological waterfall serves as the starting point of the system, flowing into the first pond before winding through a five-metre stream and arriving at the second pond. This journey creates movement, sound, and visual interest throughout the entire garden.
Key Features
- Dual ecosystem ponds connected by a natural stream
- Approximately 800mm maximum depth
- First pond measuring approximately 5m x 4m
- Second pond measuring approximately 6m x 5m
- Five-metre connecting stream
- Two Japanese-inspired bridges
- Approximately 20 tonnes of basalt rock
- Adjustable-flow circulation system
- Integrated ecosystem filtration
The ponds are powered by an Aquascape Aquasurge 4000-8000 pump and filtered via a BioFalls filtration system and skimmer, providing both excellent water quality and a healthy ecosystem.
The Handcrafted Bridges
One of the most personal aspects of this project is the pair of Japanese-inspired red coloured bridges constructed by the clients themselves.
One bridge spans the first pond while the second crosses the connecting stream. These structures provide more than just access; they create viewing platforms that allow visitors to experience the garden from different perspectives while reflecting the clients’ passion for craftsmanship and design.
Their inclusion adds a deeply personal touch that makes the garden uniquely theirs.
Our Favourite Feature: The Waterfall
Every pond project has a standout feature, and for this garden, it is undoubtedly the waterfall.
The waterfall serves as the source of life for the entire ecosystem, introducing oxygen into the water while creating the soothing sounds that define the space. Positioned to be enjoyed from the outdoor entertaining area, it provides both visual movement and a calming soundtrack throughout the day.
What makes this waterfall particularly special is how naturally it appears within the landscape. Surrounded by carefully positioned basalt boulders and framed by bonsai and garden plantings, it feels as though it has always belonged there.
Whether viewed during the day or illuminated at night, the waterfall remains the focal point that ties the entire garden together.

A tranquil Japanese-inspired waterfall, handcrafted by Pond Works to blend natural stone, flowing water and elegant landscaping into a timeless garden feature.
Challenges During Construction
As with many outdoor projects in South East Queensland, weather played a significant role during construction.
Persistent wet conditions created challenging site conditions, with mud becoming a major obstacle throughout the build process. Despite these setbacks, careful planning and perseverance allowed the team to maintain progress and deliver the project within the planned timeframe.
The Finished Result
Completed within just two weeks, this Japanese-inspired bonsai water garden successfully achieves everything the clients envisioned.
The combination of flowing water, natural basalt stone, handcrafted bridges, carefully positioned lanterns, and treasured bonsai specimens creates a landscape that feels peaceful, balanced, and deeply connected to nature.
More than simply a pond, this project has become a living showcase for decades of bonsai artistry and a place where the clients can continue to enjoy their passion for many years to come.
