Japanese Water Garden – Sunshine Coast
At Pond Works every pond teaches us something but this one marked a real shift in how we approach our work.
Located in Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast this Japanese Water Garden was constructed in 2022 and remains part of our ongoing maintenance portfolio, with annual servicing to keep it performing and looking its best.
This project was also our first true immersion into traditional Japanese design. We had the privilege of collaborating with Ken Lamb from Imperial Gardens in Sydney, whose experience in Japanese landscaping brought a depth of knowledge and intention that shaped the entire project.

A Collaborative Approach
This project brought together two complementary skill sets.
Pond Works focused on what we do best and that is constructing the pond and water feature, ensuring it functions seamlessly and stands the test of time. Ken led the broader design direction, particularly the traditional Japanese elements and the philosophy behind them.
Our role was to bring that vision to life through the water feature component, working carefully within the design framework to ensure every element felt considered and cohesive.
The Art of Rock Placement
One of the most valuable lessons we took from this project was the importance of rock placement within a Japanese Water Garden.
In Japanese garden design, rocks are often referred to as the “bones” of the garden. They create structure, guide the eye, and influence how the space is experienced.
What stood out to us was how deliberate each placement needed to be. Rocks aren’t simply arranged, they are positioned with intention, often to represent natural elements like mountains or to create a sense of balance and stability within the landscape.

What We Learned on This Project
A key takeaway for us was the role of vertical rock placement within the water feature.
Vertical stones help anchor the space and create a sense of strength and permanence. When placed correctly, they bring a natural rhythm and flow to the feature. Achieving that look requires careful thought and restraint.
This project challenged us to:
- Slow down and be more deliberate with placement
- Work within asymmetry rather than against it
- Consider how each element interacts with the whole
- Balance natural appearance with precise construction
It was a different way of thinking and one that has stayed with us.
Growing Our Capability in Japanese-Style Water Features

This project gave us a strong foundation and sparked a genuine interest in Japanese garden principles, particularly as they relate to water.
While our focus remains firmly on the water feature component, we’ve continued to build on what we learned and refine how we construct ponds and waterfalls that sit comfortably within Japanese-inspired landscapes.
Each Japanese-inspired project since has added to that experience and deepened our understanding.
Japanese-Inspired Water Features in Brisbane & SEQ
For clients across Brisbane and South East Queensland, we offer thoughtfully constructed water features that complement Japanese-style gardens.
Our approach is simple:
- Respect the design intent
- Focus on structure and longevity
- Build water features that feel natural within the space
We deliver high-quality pond construction and ongoing maintenance as part of a broader landscape vision.
Considering a Japanese Water Feature?
If you’re planning a Japanese-inspired garden or looking to incorporate a water element into your space, we’d be glad to be part of the process.
This project on the Sunshine Coast was just the beginning or us and it continues to influence how we approach every build today.
